The Art of Mokume-Gane

Invented in 17th-century Japan for sword fittings and decorative metalwork, Mokume-Gane (木目金山) translates literally as “wood-eye metal.” Layers of different metals are bonded under heat and pressure, then carved and manipulated to reveal the laminated pattern beneath. No two pieces share the same grain — like a fingerprint in metal, each scale is a unique expression of the forger's hand.

Running your fingers along the surface, you feel the subtle topography of the layers — polished ridges of copper giving way to valleys of brass, the whole thing catching light differently with every angle. On the Shaman's broad, palm-filling handle, it is nothing short of spectacular.
